Eloise Pickard Smith Gallery (Cowell College) dedication: James D. Houston
Description
Inventory note: "Cowell Gallery dedication". From the Sentinel: "The Cowell College faculty presented the Smiths with a gift of Zajac sculpture and it was announced that the Cowell Gallery has been renamed the Eloise Pickard Smith Gallery. The name, approved by UC Regents, honors Mrs. Smith who established the campus art center and obtained works of internationally known artists and exhibits from some of the nations prominent galleries. Sculptor Zajac, winner of the Prix de Rome, has been sculptor-in-residence at Cowell during the past academic year. Founding provost of the first five colleges at UCSC, Dr. Smith will leave that post July 1. While on a year's sabbatical leave, he plans to write a history of the American Revolution. He will return to Cowell College as professor of historical studies in the fall of 1971."
